The Merchant’s Hotel at Fourth and Market Streets is a key setting in the historical coming-of-age novel Shot Tower.
The hotel opened as the Washington Hotel on the first block of north Fourth Street, in 1837 and enjoyed a run as the premier lodging destination in Philadelphia, mostly due to its location.
